Verulamium was one of the most significant urban centres in Roman Britain, established initially as a client settlement before becoming a chartered city (municipium) around AD 79. The site encompasses ruins of defensive walls, a theatre, forum, shops, and residential buildings spread across the flood plain of the River Ver.
