Durocortorum, later renamed Augusta Suessonum, was a significant Gallo-Roman settlement established in the territory of the Suessiones Celtic tribe. The site developed from a pre-Roman oppidum into a prosperous Roman town with defensive fortifications, administrative buildings, and commercial infrastructure.
